Calling All Brisvegans...
7th February 2005, 6.36pm
It's been a flurry of activity here
today. Man Bites Dog has been shortlisted
for the One Book, One Brisbane award, which I have to say is a
little unexpected. Judging from the title of the prize, you'd think
that a book about such an unBrisbanian place as North Fitzroy might
kind of be out of the running, but apparently this is about judging
Brisbane's favourite book, not the best book about Brisbane. This
is a people's choice kind of award, which is why I'm about to do
the same thing I've seen my muso friends do when the Triple J Hottest
100 rolls around. I'm going to go the spruik.
<spruik> If you're reading
this and you happen to live in Brisbane, know someone who lives
in Brisbane or if you have relatives of any stripe who live in
Brisbane, you or your friend or your family member are eligible
to vote in these awards. It's as easy as visiting
the web site and clicking on your favourite. Now, if you fall
into any of the above categories, and you've read Man Bites
Dog and you think it's deserving of your vote, or your friend's
vote, or your family members' vote, well, all I'm saying is that
you're in a position to do something about it.
If you fall into one of the above
categories and you haven't read Man Bites Dog,
but you think you might want to, then why not read
a sample chapter, and then if you like what you've read, you
might want to actually buy a copy
of it. If that happens, there are a few tips on how to go about
that here. Or maybe you're not so convinced as to hand over the
readys - no problem. Since One Book, One Brisbane, is being presented
by the Brisbane City Council Libraries Association, you
could just borrow a copy instead. You've got a month - the
votes aren't counted until after the 6th of March, so there's no
amazing hurry on this. </spruik> </geek>
And just a brief note to acknowledge
exactly how freaky and intimidating it is to be in a shortlist
alongside Janette Turner Hospital and Louis Nowra: that would be very freaky
and intimidating. Yes indeed. Also good. But undeniably freaky.
Tomorrow morning I'm being interviewed
by the Courier-Mail, and after that a photographer is
apparently coming over to take a photo of me. They asked if I minded
having the photo taken while I'm sitting on my bike next to a mailbox.
Good thing MBD's a realist novel and not a NeoPulp dealie.
I have no idea where I would find a superhero at such short notice.
